This box is coiled in a dark coloured grogged clay with slip loaded incisions and a foot detail. It has a wood ash glaze outside, Magnolia ash insidewith an impressed fish motif in the base.
English Oak lid from a doorpost in East Kirkby House, which is presumed to be a hunting lodge built for the nearby Bolingbroke Castle in Lincolnshire. The date stone over the doorway is 1659 and the wood is contemporary to that date.
The wood came from recent restoration work by Heritage England.
The lid is carved to fit with an antique hand forged nails and is finished with Danish oil.
